Cheering on their Warriors from afar: Red Lake fans gather in Bemidji to root on basketball team

BEMIDJI -- The wings and the fries came, conveniently, around halftime.

Red Lake teachers and community members -- about 20 in all -- packed into a private back room Friday afternoon at Buffalo Wild Wings to clap, gasp and groan as the Red Lake boys’ basketball team played Minneapolis North in the Class A semifinals of the Minnesota state tournament. Teachers were able to come, too, because the Warriors at state meant no kids at school. Nearly everything in Red Lake was shut down the past few days.

“It’s exhilarating” watching them play, said Tara Olson, who teaches language arts at Red Lake Middle School. She taught many of the boys who squeaked across the 10 TVs in the little room.

“They just love the game so much,” she said.
