Pennock man charged in assault after apparent drug deal yields only salt

WILLMAR — A Pennock, Minn., man has been charged with second-degree assault in Kandiyohi County District Court after an apparent drug deal at Casey's General Store in Willmar went awry as he was given salt instead of drugs and a tussle ensued.

Court documents say 41-year-old Emilio Florez told police that he had met two people Feb. 23 at Casey's to buy what he referred to as "candy." After paying $90 for the substance, he left the store, then realized that the bag of "candy" was really just a bag of salt.

The criminal complaint says Florez allegedly called one of the individuals the next day, threatening to kick in his door if he did not pay for the substance. After they met the next day, they got in a tussle outside their vehicles and a woman with Florez allegedly reached into the other vehicle and took the man's cell phone and a screwdriver. The criminal complaint says she handed the screwdriver to Florez, who was able to strike the man in his face and stab him in the stomach.
