Trio of panel presentations highlight Women's History Month celebration at Bemidji State University

March 7,2016 — The women’s studies gender studies program at Bemidji State University, in collaboration with the departments of English and music, are hosting a trio of free public panel conversations throughout March to celebrate Women’s History Month.

The presentations, scheduled for March 10, 24 and 31, support the month’s theme, “Working Toward a More Perfect Union: Honoring Women in Government and Public Service.”

Women in Leadership

The March 10 panel, which will focus on women in leadership positions, includes BSU faculty Dr. Rucha Ambikar, assistant professor of sociology, and Dr. Vivian Delgado, assistant professor of languages and indigenous studies. They will be joined by Beltrami County Attorney Annie Claesson-Huseby. The panel begins at 3:30 p.m in Hagg-Sauer Hall 107.

Women in Public Service

The month’s signature event celebrating women in public service will take place March 24. Headlining the panel will be Bemidji Mayor and BSU alumna Rita Albrecht. She will be joined by Carri Jones, BSU alumna and chair of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, Beltrami County Administrator Kay Mack and a group of women representing First City Dance Studios. A pre-panel reception begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Main Theatre lobby of BSU’s Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex, with the panel presentation beginning at 7 p.m. Both events are open free to everyone.

Concert: ‘Someone Will Remember Us’

Antique instrument musician and songstress Lauren Pelon will wrap up the month’s activities with a March 31 concert, “Someone Will Remember Us,” which celebrates the “music of women in days of old.” Pre-curtain and intermission performances will also be held by the BSU Medieval Club and students of “Hoods, Tarts and Ladies.” The performance will start at 7 p.m. in the Thompson Recital Hall of BSU’s Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex.
