Yakama Tribal boys basketball shows its poise in state debut

SPOKANE, Wash. — It took a while for the state jitters to hit Yakama Tribal but the Eagles responded to that lapse like a seasoned postseason team.

After an impressive first half in the program’s first-ever state game, Yakama Tribal hit a wall in the third quarter and looked to be on the ropes against Shorewood Christian.

But the young Eagles continued to show postseason poise well beyond their years and regrouped, picking up their defensive intensity and getting key fourth-quarter offensive plays from Yemowa Eagleheart and Star Sun Billy to pull away for a 59-49 victory in a Class 1B boys state quarterfinal Thursday at the Spokane Arena.
