From KKCQ Radio

Section 8A East Quarterfinal – Warriors advance in Section 8A with 81-56 win over Clearbrook-Gonvick at BSU

After leading by only one at halftime, the Red Lake Warriors brought for a more intense and focused defense to the second half, forcing the Bears to thirteen second half turnovers compared to only seven in the first half. The Bears were able to capitlize on twelve Red Lake turnovers in the first half and limited playing time for one of the top performers on the Red Lake side Rob McClain who suffered from foul trouble early on. Looking like the Warriors were going to pull away late in the first half up 29-20 with a few minutes remaining, Clearbrook/Gonvick put together some good offense with their transition game and cut the deficit to trail 31-30 going into the halftime locker room. A much deeper, balanced team offensively, the Warriors kept a fresh rotation in the final eighteen minutes which helped in their added energy late in the game.

Red Lake shot 18-25 from the free throw line, had 46 rebounds, six steals and 18 turnovers

Rob Beauleau III had a great game tallying 12 points, 20 rebounds and seven blocked shots

Section 8A West Quarterfinal – #3 Stephen/Argyle outlasts #6 Ada-Borup in OT 65-58

FINAL in Overtime

When these two teams met in the regular season it was a late Stephan Argyle three pointer and free throws that allowed the Storm to win the game. In the Playoff Rematch it was much the same story. In a close game throughout, there would be 10 ties and 10 lead changes in the game, Stephan Argyle would take a one point lead into halftime when Chris McGlynn nailed a three pointer right before half, and the Storm used that momentum to open up a seven point lead in the second half. Ada-Borup would then make defensive stops, hit some shots and fight back into the game to take a 52-51 lead in the final minute. After the Cougars added another basket to make it a three point game Stephan Argyle would call a timeout with 18 seconds left. They would then go the length of the court before Justin Yutrzenka would hit a contested three to tie it up at 54-54. After another timeout, the Cougars would get a good look at the buzzer but the ball bounced off of the side of the rim to send the game to overtime. We would be tied twice in the overtime before Stephan-Argyle went up by one, forced a steal, was fouled on the tranisition layup and made the free throw to make it a four point game. The Storm would then close out the game from the free throw line for the win. The Storm will now play #2 Northern Freeze on Saturday. Ada-Borup ends their season 14-12 and graduates eight seniors.

Section 8A West Quarterfinal – #4 Red Lake County edges #5 Fertile/Beltrami to advance 65-64

Despite trailing the entire game the Red Lake County Rebels found a way to come back in the closing seconds of the game to tie and take a lead and then played tight defense on the other end to not allow Fertile Beltrami to get a clean final shot off to hold on for the win 65-64. Fertile Beltrami shot the lights out in the 1s half connecting on 8 3 pointers and would build a 13 point lead. RLC would cut the lead to 6 towards the end of the 1st half but the Falcons defense made it tough for RLC to mount much offense. At the half F-B would lead 40-32. In the 2nd half RLC would turn up the defensive intensity and would also start connecting on some 3 point attempts as well to cut a 10 point lead down to 6 with time winding down. F-B would find some foul trouble which would keep some key players on the bench for a stretch and inturn RLC would use that to to cut the lead to 1. The score would stay around a 1 to 4 point lead for the Falcons until 2:14 when RLC would tie the game at 64. F-B would try to run some time off the clock and in fact would take the clock all the way down to 14 seconds when RLC would force a turnover. RLCs Drake Engelstad would be fouled on the fast break layup and would have 2 free throws. He would make 1 of 2 and the Rebels would have their first lead with 6.9 seconds remaining. The Falcons would get 1 final shot off but it wouldnt fall and the Rebels would get the rebound and hang on for the 1 point win and will now move on to face Kittson County Central on Saturday.
