Suspect in Columbia Heights shooting death is arrested

An 18-year-old man charged with murder in a shooting death last month in Columbia Heights was arrested Friday in northern Minnesota.

Evan Ramon Denny, of Minneapolis, was taken into custody Friday afternoon on the Red Lake Reservation by Red Lake tribal police.

He has been charged in Anoka County District Court with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Mohamud Adbiwahab Hilowle. Because he was taken into custody on the reservation, which is a sovereign entity, Anoka County has begun extradition procedures.

Hilowle, 20, was shot inside a home in the 1200 block of Circle Terrace Boulevard shortly before midnight on Jan. 23. Several people in the residence left before police arrived, including Hilowle. Acquaintances took him to a hospital with three gunshot wounds.

The shooting followed an argument in the apartment between Denny and Hilowle over a cellphone, witnesses told police, according to the criminal complaint.

Denny also has been charged with second-degree assault stemming from an incident on Jan. 19 outside a home in the 5600 block of 3rd Avenue S. in Minneapolis, the Sheriff's Office added.

In that case, Denny was in a car and shot a man who came out of a home, according to the assault complaint. The shooting stemmed from a dispute over an earlier illicit drug transaction, the complaint continued.
