10th Annual Drug and Gang Summit held in Red Lake - P8

This year's theme was "Coming together for the people"

RED LAKE, MN – The 10th Annual Drug and Gang Summit kicked off the first day of the three-day event on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at the Red Lake Casino Event Center.

After the opening ceremonies and introductions by MC Murphy Thomas, Red Lake Executive Director of Chemical Health Programs welcomed everyone and opening remarks were provided by Red Lake Nation Chairman Darrell Seki Sr.

The Key Note speaker was Kasey Nicholson, licensed addiction counselor, and other guest speakers were Michael Peters, Rueben Crowfeather and Jerald Cobenais.

Workshops were held in the afternoon and included First Steps to Health Babies, Civil Commitment and CHP Resources, Meth and Heroin Prevention, Suicide Prevention/Grieving, Recovery Coach/Peer Support Chemical Health Programs, Medicine Wheel, Gang Prevention, Substance Abuse Programs and Equay Wiigamig, Women's Shelter.

Day 2 activities will include the Key Note address by Senator Jonathan Windy Boy from the State of Montana and guest speaker Rosemary White Shield who will speak about "Native Healing Approaches to Trauma."

Workshops are also scheduled for the afternoon, with a Round Dance Social scheduled for 6 PM.

Day 3 and the final day will feather Kelly Brunell and Ron Leyba from Red Lake Law Enforcement who will present "Highway Safety & Drug Interdiction," healing ceremonies after them, and drawings for prizes and closing.

About 170 attended Day 1 activities, and the event is sponsored by the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians and Red Lake Chemical Health Programs, along with other participating agencies.
