On February 11, 2016, 6th grade students at Red Lake Middle School competed in the school's snow snake competition. Students competed in Artistic Design, Distance, Accuracy, and Hoop Throw. Awards were presented to first, second, and third place in each category. An award was also given to the homeroom with the highest average score; this year the award went to Rachel Boughton's homeroom.
6th grade students began the process of making their snow snakes last fall. Bob Shimek worked with the students throughout the process, starting first with sharing the legend of snow snakes. Students then ventured out to search for and cut their own sticks for their snow snakes. They peeled the bark from the sticks, sanded the sticks until smooth, and then painted the snow snakes.
The snow snake project was funded through the school's Turnaround Arts grant. RLMS belongs to a network of Turnaround Arts schools across the country, which uses the arts to improve student learning as part of a signature program of the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. Turnaround Arts: Minnesota is run by the Perpich Center for Arts Education, with funding provided by the Minnesota State Legislature through its Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, as well as by the Minnesota State Arts Board.
