Joseph Frederick Holstein, Jr., Aniimiikii – "Thunder Bird", of the Loon Clan, age 72, of Cass Lake, MN began his spiritual journey on Sunday, February 14, 2016 with his family by his side. Joseph was born on May 24, 1943, in Cass Lake, the son of Joseph Holstein, Sr., and Marion (Budreau) Folstrom.

Joe was raised in Cass Lake and attended Cass Lake High School. He joined and served in the U.S. Marine Corps and honorably served his country for four years before his discharge. Joe married his sweetheart Beulah Lewis and they enjoyed 51 years together. Together they raised two daughters; Jolyn and Jean. When he returned from the service, Joe attended and completed heavy equipment school in Staples and Bemidji State University. He also attended the University of Utah where he would obtain an Associate's Degree as a Civil Engineering Technician. Joe spent 24 years at the BIA road construction department. Following his retirement he continued to work for Fond du Lac, Bois Forte, Leech Lake and White Earth reservations. During his career, Joe gained many colleagues and many friends. He was also elected to two terms for the Cass Lake-Bena School District and was also elected Chairman of the White Earth Local Community Council for the Cass Lake area. Joe's hobbies included ricing, hunting, fishing, going to the casino, and playing cards with his family. Joe's true enjoyment came from spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He truly loved them. Joe will be sadly missed by all family and friends who knew him.

The family that Joe joins again are his parents, his sisters; Roberta Holstein-Wind, Frances Holstein, and Carmel Headbird, brother; Robert Holstein, numerous aunts and uncles.

Those he leaves behind to cherish his memory are his wife; Beulah, daughters; Jolyn (Jeff) Donnell of Cass Lake, and Jean (Mike) LaRoque of Waubun, MN, uncle; Eugene "Dopey" Budreau of Cass Lake, sister; Janice (Clyde) Morgan of Cass Lake, grandchildren; Cara and Alissa Donnell, Emma LaRoque, Jeffrey Donnell, Jr., Mareena and Mikeala LaRoque, great grandchildren; Scotty and Adrian Brown, Shane Woods, Jr., Kallea Brown and Frederick "Freddy" York.

A wake for Joe will begin at 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 17, 2016 and will continue until the 11:00 a.m. service on Friday, February 19, all held at the Veteran's Memorial Building in Cass Lake. Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Donnell, Sr., Mike LaRoque, Jeffrey Donnell, Jr., John Alvin Wind, Jody Jansen and Patrick Staples. Honorary Pallbearers will be Wallace Humphrey, Jim Dorr, Frank Villebrun, Harold Goodsky, Leo Blair, Wayne LaDuke, Mike Kornezos, Eugene "Dopey" Budreau and Alfred "Koko" Folstrom. Interment will be held in the Pine Grove Cemetery at Cass Lake following the service.
