Judge backs city in suit over Callow fireworks stand

BREMERTON — A Kitsap County judge has banned a once popular fireworks stand from operating unless it meets state and city licensing requirements.

Though the stand at 1321 North Callow Avenue is on federal "land in trust," with status similar to a tribal reservation, Judge Kevin Hull sided with attorneys for Bremerton that it must adhere to the same rules as other stands permitted in the city.

Bremerton police and fire officials said in court documents they viewed the stand as hazardous, in part because it sells fireworks banned under state law. The owners have said as federal land in trust, they fall under the jurisdiction of the Suquamish Tribe, which had licensed them.
