Tribal leader, marine veteran William Coffey, Jr. dies at 86

The Reno-Sparks Indian Colony lost a prominent member of the tribal community last week, veteran and 22-year tribal council member William Coffey, Jr. He was 86.

Coffey was born Jan. 8, 1930, in Loyalton, Calif., and died Jan. 24, 2016 at his home in the colony.

William Coffey, Jr. served as a tribal council member for 22 years non-consecutively from 1955 to 2000 following in the footsteps of his father, former tribe chairman William Coffey, Sr., who served as a tribal council member prior to taking the tribe’s highest seat from 1950 to 1951.
