Specialty crop research funds available

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is encouraging fruit, vegetable and other specialty crop organizations to apply for Specialty Crop Block Grants to help increase the competitiveness of their crops. In anticipation of *$1.2 million* in federal funding, the MDA is now seeking proposals for projects that will identify opportunities or barriers to growing and marketing specialty crops. Non-profits, government agencies, universities and other organizations involved in Minnesota agriculture research and development are encouraged to apply. These grants are not for individual business development.

Specialty crops are identified as fruits and vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, horticulture, and nursery crops, including floriculture.

Grant applications are due to the MDA by April 29, 2016. Projects may last up to two years and eight months and awards will range from $10,000 - $100,000.

Project review and recommendations will be provided to the MDA by an outside independent panel with experience growing, marketing, researching and promoting specialty crops.
