State of the Band - Concerns noted, but 'future looking very bright'

“2015 was an important year in the history of the Band,” Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe Chief Executive Melanie Benjamin said. “It was a year of real progress.”

Benjamin delivered the 32nd State of the Band address on Tuesday, Jan. 12, to a full house standing room only crowd at the banquet room at the Grand Casino.

Benjamin’s speech focused on the theme of justice for Anishinabe people. She called for economic, social and environmental justice. With more than 1,000 Band members in attendance, Benjamin highlighted the successes the Band had achieved in 2015 and laid out new initiatives to combat drugs and crime on the reservation while increasing economic opportunity for all Band members.
