Band to get federal help in war against crime

The Department of Justice announced Tuesday, Jan. 12, it has granted a request by the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe for the United States to assume concurrent criminal jurisdiction on the Band’s reservation lands, according to Deputy Attorney General Sally Quillian Yates.

Mille Lacs Band Chief Executive Melanie Benjamin said the federal firepower will give a huge kick in the war against drugs and major crimes on the reservation and beyond.

“This is a good thing for us – for the entire community and the entire state,” Benjamin said.
