BEMIDJI -- A federal program may be able to help people with home repairs this spring. USDA Rural Development, a federally funded agency, may be the answer for residences requiring home improvements, a release said. A loan through the program would include a 1 percent interest rate for the life of the loan. Maximum loan available is $20,000 with up to a 20-year repayment term. There are no mortgage or closing costs for loans less than $7,500. There are grants available up to $7,500 for health and safety issues for those age 62 and older.
A successful applicant’s annual, adjusted income must not exceed the following guidelines: one person, $22,350; two people, $25,550; three people, $28,750; four people, $31,900 and five people, 34,500. In addition, applicants must have an acceptable credit history and be able to show repayment ability.
