Fond du Lac Participates in Land Buyback Program

The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa is beginning work to address a land ownership challenge on the reservation.

The Land Buyback Program for Tribal Nations is part of a $3.4 billion settlement. The class action lawsuit filed by Elouise Cobell claimed that the U.S. Department of Interior mismanaged trust money. This buyback program is an attempt to right that wrong.

Thanks to the Dawes Act of 1887, many plots on the Fond du Lac reservation are divided among hundreds of land owners making it nearly impossible for anyone to actually use the land.
