Rose Downwind, "Miskaabanookwe" which means "Morning of the Red Dawn", 31 years old, of Bemidji, Minnesota and of the Bear Clan, journeyed to the spirit world on October 20, 2015. Rose was born on November 8, 1983 in Minneapolis, MN to Darla Banks of Oneida/Leech Lake and Francis "Boog" Downwind of the Red Lake Nation, Redby, MN.

To everything there is a time and a purpose under Heaven. Rose Downwind will be remembered as a beautiful, loving and vibrant woman. Her greatest love was her children and being their Mother. Rose adored her children Jaya, Jasmine, Leilani, Brother and Mirabel. These children were her sacred and greatest joy. Being a mother was Rose's gift. She was her children's teacher, mentor and inspiration. Rose wanted all the best that life could provide for them. Her children will reside with her sister Kristy and Doug White. It is a comfort to know that Rose's beloved children will have the best life possible. All of Rose's hopes and dreams will manifest in the light of her children.

Rose's life story could be perceived as an adventure. She had the good fortune to be a part of her paternal Uncle Tutter and Mom Georgia Downwind's family. Rose lived with them on and off throughout her life. She loved them dearly and depended on them for guidance. This was an unbroken bond that Rose appreciated, as it is the Anishinabe way to have extended family caretakers. Rose's loving kindness and deep commitment to Motherhood will be her legacy and a legend that will forever be held dear to our hearts.

Those to greet Rose in the spirit world are her grandparents; Ogie and Dorothy Downwind and Jeanette Banks, aunts, uncles & several cousins.

Loving survivors of Rose are her children; Jaya Silcox of Onigum, Jasmine, Leilani, Brother and Mirabel Downwind of Redby, her parents; Darla Banks, Francis "Boog" Downwind, Georgia and Tutter Downwind, sisters; Jessica Banks, Kristy White, Kari Washington, Kelly Chaboyea, Tawasin King, Danielle Thunder, Anna Bollen and Liza Spears, brothers; Adrian and Travis Sayers, Desmond and Frank Gerring, grandfather; Dennis Banks of Leech Lake, and grandmother; Ethel Pemberton of Redby and Adele Downwind-Zephier of Marty, SD.

A wake for Rose will begin on Wednesday, January 6, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at the Red Lake Humanities Building in Red Lake, MN and continue until the 10:00 a.m. traditional service on Friday, January 8th. On Wednesday, traditional prayers will start at 5:00 p.m. Terrence Nelson will be Rose's Spiritual Leader. Pallbearers for Rose will be Adrian Sayers, Travis Sayers, Frank Gerring, Desmond Gerring, Doug White and Ken Washington. Honorary pallbearers are all her casino worker friends, classmates, and her friends that loved her dearly. Interment will be in the Downwind Family Burial Grounds at Redby following her Friday service.
