Hibbing bank robber used money to buy lottery tickets

HIBBING, Minn. -- An Iron Range man faces up to 15 years in prison for allegedly robbing a Hibbing bank inside Wal-Mart and threatening to shoot an employee last week.

Johnathan Charles Firebaugh, 33, was charged this week with second-degree aggravated robbery; he also faces additional drug charges. He is being held at the St. Louis County Jail on $100,000 bail after appearing in court Tuesday; he has another court hearing scheduled for today (Thursday.)

A bank employee told officers that the man ran up the counter and told her it was a robbery, and that he'd shoot her if she looked at him. Officers tracked the suspect using footprints and a police dog, which led to a gas station about two miles away. Employees there said a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt came into the store at about 7:45 p.m. and bought $150 worth of scratch-off lottery tickets, resulting in $200 in winnings.
