MoDOT officials cite health and safety risks in closing historic roadside park

WAYLAND, Mo. -- A Clark County roadside park listed on the National Register of Historic Places has been closed to vehicle traffic because of abuses by the public.

Mound Park, located just south of Wayland along U.S. 61 in the southeast corner of Clark County, is known nationally as a historic Native American burial mound. It served as a small roadside park since 1958.

Officials with the Missouri Department of Transportation shut off vehicle access Wednesday for health and safety reasons.
