Heroin overdose medication going to Indian County

A life-saving drug that reverses the effect of a heroin and painkiller overdose will soon be available for police in Indian Country.

The federal government announced this week that it intends to put naloxone in the hands of Bureau of Indian Affairs police in a partnership with the Indian Health Service, which offers medical care on the reservations of the United States.

The announcement comes amid a growing trend of heroin abuse that’s spread across the country, one the state of South Dakota expects to see eventually. The partnership on overdose drugs comes two weeks after the South Dakota Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners voted on a set of guidelines that will put naloxone in the hands of police, firefighters and other first responders.
