2016 road project set to expand Highway 371 to four lanes from Nisswa to Jenkins; officials hope for more expansion in the future
BEMIDJI -- The Minnesota Department of Transportation is preparing for a 2016 project that will expand a portion of Minnesota Highway 371 to four lanes, making the idea of a complete expressway between Brainerd and Bemidji one step closer to reality.
The project will expand a section of Highway 371 from Nisswa to Jenkins and is the latest in a series of undertakings that have transformed the stretch of road the past 15 years. Since 2000, projects have taken place that have expanded the highway from two to four lanes from Little Falls through the Brainerd and Baxter region on the way to Nisswa.
According to a MNDOT webpage, the $58 million project will extend into 2017 and will add road and Paul Bunyan Trail connections and construct bridges over Cullen Brook. The project will include adding four lanes on the highway through Pequot Lakes.
