Melvina "Mel" Rose Johnson (Omamikwe), 91 of Red Lake, MN died Sunday, December 13, 2015 at the Jourdain/Perpich Extended Care Center in Red Lake.

Funeral services will be at 12:00 pm, Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Red Lake, Minnesota with Fr. Jerry Rogers officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at the Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis under the direction of the Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji.

She was born December 22, 1923 in Red Lake, MN the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Sumner) Strong. She attended school at St. Mary's Mission school and Red Lake High School. She married Alexander "Barney" Johnson in 1947 in Red Lake, MN. She worked for the Alameda Shipyards in California and worked as a head start teacher in Red Lake, retiring in 1988. She enjoyed sewing, bead work, crocheting, attending pow-wow's and loved her pets. She served on the Little Rock Center Board of Directors for awhile as well.

She is survived by her brother James "Gus" Strong of Redby and also survived by and also will serve as active casketbearers are her grand nephews: Harlan (Linda) Beaulieu, Adrian (Karen) Beaulieu, Oran (Cheryl) Beaulieu, Oliver (Elizabeth) Beaulieu, Leo Beaulieu and Timothy (Della) Beaulieu all of Red Lake; grand nieces: Norine (Paul, Jr.) Smith, Gwen (Percy) Spears and Harlene (Marlon) Blue all of Red Lake.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters Olive Neadeau, Margaret and Alma; brothers Joseph, Jr., Harvey, Burton, Melvin, Peter and William Strong; grand niece Willa Beaulieu and niece Evon Beaulieu.
