Missing Pakuashipi children: Innu leaders demand public inquiry

The Innu council of Pakuashipi is calling for a public inquiry to shed light on the disappearance of children from the tiny community on Quebec's North Shore between 1970 and 1972.

In a letter sent to Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard, Chief Denis Mestenapeo implored the government to "help the families involved, as well as the entire community of Pakuashipi, so that all the circumstances of the deaths of these children are finally revealed."

In November, the Radio-Canada investigative program Enquête revealed that children in the isolated Innu community died after being sent to a hospital in Blanc-Sablon, some 200 kilometres east of Pakuashipi. Most died from respiratory infections.
