New shelter by New Year's Day?
BEMIDJI—Two wooden posts remain barren in front of Bemidji's long awaited homeless shelter on America Avenue and Sixth Street Northwest. Once construction of The Wolfe Center is complete, a sign bearing the shelter's name will be added to the posts declaring the two-year-in-the-making shelter official. But, when will it open?
The Nameless Coalition for the Homeless, the non-profit organization responsible for the shelter, set an opening date of Nov. 1—which was pushed to Dec. 1 due to construction delays. Coalition member Howie Zetah, owner of Zetah Construction, is completing much of the work at no or low cost, and laborers in the community are volunteering time to work on interior and exterior renovations. Now, Dec. 1 has come and gone and the coalition is projecting a Jan. 1 grand opening.
