Tribal prosecutor deputized in state court

PINE RIDGE, S.D. - Legal History was to be made Tuesday in Pine Ridge as the Oglala Sioux Tribe's attorney general was to be deputized to prosecute crimes in state court.

The tribe's top law enforcement officer, Tatewin Means, was to be sworn in as deputy states attorney in Oglala Sioux County Tuesday morning.

The move comes as federal, state and tribal legal officials are working break though the confusing thicket of jurisdictions in Indian Country. In many cases, tribal law enforcement officials don't have jurisdiction over non tribal members who commit crimes on the reservation. Deputizing the tribe's top prosecutor to operate in state court will allow tribal law enforcement to follow through on cases that today have to be handed over to other authorities which can create communication glitches.
