Red Lake, Leech Lake flags rise up at Beltrami County Courthouse - P2
BEMIDJI -- Flags representing the Red Lake Band of Chippewa and the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe joined those of the United States and Minnesota on Tuesday, marking the start of their presence in Beltrami County courtrooms.
Both flags were set in place in one of the Beltrami County courtrooms during a ceremony which Chief Judge Paul Benshoof called a culmination of many months of planning. According to Benshoof, he and other judges from Beltrami County reached out in the spring to honor both Leech Lake and Red Lake through a tribal flag-raising ceremony.
Many months later, the symbolic gesture became a reality. During Tuesday's event, songs were performed by Eyabay Singers, and Leech Lake Spiritual Advisor Larry Aitken was present to bless the opening of the ceremony.
