Minnesota residents face drug, weapons charges after Kane County traffic stop

Three Minnesota residents are behind bars Friday after a traffic stop in the northwest suburbs led to the discovery of drugs and weapons in their car, according to police.

A Kane County sheriff's deputy pulled over a 2007 Chevrolet Impala about 1 p.m. Wednesday for an equipment violation on I-90 near Route 47 in an unincorporated area near Huntley, a statement from the sheriff's office said.

While the car was stopped, "a narcotic detection K9 was deployed around the exterior of the vehicle" and the dog "indicated a potential presence of narcotics inside of the vehicle," the sheriff's office said.

A search of the vehicle turned up 400 grams of heroin; a .45 caliber handgun; a 9mm handgun; and about $9,000 in cash, according to police. The heroin had an estimated street value of about $80,000.

Arrested were the driver, Jessica Johnson, 29, of Redby, Minnesota; Leo Cook, 31, also of Redby; and Derek Paddy, 19, of Red Lake, Minnesota. All three were charged with manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance; possession of a controlled substance; and armed violence, according to police.

All three were ordered held on $800,000 bonds.
