Struggling American Indian students to get help from St. Paul schools

St. Paul Public Schools will monitor its American Indian students more closely in an effort to send extra support to those who get off track.

There are about 700 American Indian students in the district, just less than 2 percent of total enrollment. Advocates say their relatively small number has made them invisible in the schools despite generally dismal attendance and academic performance.

"We were told our numbers were so small that we weren't seen in the data," Laurie Harper, who chairs a parents committee, told the school board recently.
