Washington tribal leaders, in D.C., protest proposed coal terminal at Cherry Point

Tribal leaders from across Washington state say that their treaty rights require rejection of a giant coal export terminal, proposed for Cherry Point north of Bellingham and have taken their case to the annual White House Tribal Nations Conference.

“We’re taking a united stand against corporate interests that interfere with our treaty protected rights,” said Tim Ballew II, chairman of the Lummi Indian Business Council. The Lummis’ reservation is just south of the Cherry Point industrial area, proposed as location for the Gateway Pacific terminal.
