Cherokee Nation wages war on hepatitis C

The Cherokee Nation is doing its part to eliminate hepatitis C among Natives in Indian Country, according to a media release.

The Cherokee Nation brought the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other health researchers together to the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Tulsa recently to discuss a new study the tribe is leading to prevent and treat the illness, an infection that affects the liver.

The Cherokee Nation received a $1.5 million grant from Gilead Sciences in July. With the funding and support of fellow health agencies, nearly 300 patients at Cherokee Nation's W.W. Hastings Hospital identified with hepatitis C have been treated with shots. Doctors say for 90 percent, it was effective for curing the illness.
