Fort Peck tribal leaders sworn in

POPLAR – Newly elected Fort Peck tribal leaders pledged unity and fewer politics in their council meeting chambers Monday when they were sworn into office.

Fifteen council members and four tribal judges were elected Saturday during the Assiniboine and Sioux tribes’ biannual election.

Floyd Azure of Poplar, who served previously as chairman from 2013-2015, was elected again and will replace retiring Tribal Chairman A.T. “Rusty” Stafne of Oswego. Azure defeated challengers John Morales, Larry Wetsit, Barry Bighorn and Garrett Big Leggins.
