After Successful Weekend, 2015 SACNAS Conference Concludes With Awards Ceremony, Pachanga Dance

3000+ Students, STEM Professionals Return Home With Tools, Renewed Resolve to Improve Diversity in STEM

WASHINGTON D.C.—On the final day of SACNAS’ Diversity in STEM Conference, students participated in their last professional panels and symposia and prepared for the trip home. The busy weekend ended with an award ceremony and remarks by Dr. Jon Lorsch Director, National Institute of General Medical Sciences.

This year’s SACNAS conference was one of the largest and most diverse gatherings of STEM professionals in the country and hosted over 3000 participants from more than 30 states.

Said SACNAS Executive Director, Antonia Franco, “It’s more than just a tagline. ‘Science, culture and community’, imbues the very essence of who we are and what we do. I am confident that we can accomplish our vision to diversify the STEM workforce. To one that actually reflects the unique talent, power and potential that our communities have.”

Added Dr. Gabriel Montaño, “The success of our individual members is amplified by success of our collective. We do this by finding active roles for all SACNISTAs...we are greater than our individual accomplishments because together these singular accomplishments have an exponential effect. SACNAS was born out of a movement and that movement has not ended. It is still on the rise and I challenge each of you to embrace your role in this movement. Together we can, and we are, changing the face of science.”

SACNAS spokespeople and students are available for interviews following the conference. If you would like to schedule an interview, please contact Taylor Booth(taylor@newpartners.com) for and Yamila Pino (yamila@prosperolatino.com) for Spanish inquiries.
