POSITION TITLE: Campus Security Officer– Part-Time/On-Call/Events

DEPARTMENT: Finance/Facilities Management

REPORTS TO: FT Campus Security Officer and Chief Financial Officer

CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt

SHIFT: Red Lake Nation College is hiring two part-time/on-call campus security officers to work as needed for weekend events and/or to fill-in for other security staff members. Hours may vary significantly and may include weekdays and/or weekends.

WAGE: This position pays $10.00-$11.00 per hour based upon experience.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS: Provides personal, equipment, and property security for faculty, staff, students, and visitors at the Red Lake Nation College Campus. Provides escort services, and other basic public assistance services as needed, and performs routine security and public safety patrol duties. Remains alert to emergency situations and provides first-line response, emergency management, and/or referral if required.

ACCOUNTABILTY: The Campus Security Officer reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

SECURITY:

1. Patrols internal and external campus facility on foot, in assigned motor vehicle, to ensure personal, building, and equipment security.

2. Examines doors, windows, and gates to ensure security; uses RLNC keys to open and close doors; monitors building for unauthorized persons and/or suspicious activities.

3. Informs and warns violators of rule infractions, such as smoking or carrying forbidden articles.

4. Provides escort services for visitors, students, staff, and faculty, as necessary; provides other public assistance, such as lockout services, jump-starts, and routine information.

5. Watches for and reports irregularities, such as security breaches, facility and safety hazards, and emergency situations; contacts emergency responders, such as police, fire, and/or ambulance personnel, as required.

6. Remains alert for the presence of unauthorized persons and/or security violators; approaches suspicious persons and/or notifies police as appropriate; may confront and/or detain violators, as required, until police arrive.

7. Maintains a highly visible presence to deter crime and disorderly conduct.

8. Operates and responds to two-way radio communication.

9. Performs periodic checks of outdoor lighting and cameras to ensure proper functioning; reports malfunctions as required.

10. Attends extracurricular events to maintain order and deter crime.

11. Patrols and monitors parking areas to provide public security and assistance.

12. Maintains security controls for issued RLNC keys; safeguards and controls issued equipment.

13. Writes referrals to student offenders.

14. Detains and escorts student offenders to the appropriate administrator(s).

15. Prepares clear and concise incident reports.

16. Attends meetings with supervisor and other administrators to discuss security matters.

17. Administers basic first aid and CPR as needed.

18. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE/REQUIREMENTS:

1. Ability to successfully conduct security patrols without direct supervision.

2. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

3. Ability to complete routine paperwork.

4. Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.

5. Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.

6. Ability to operate a two-way radio and camera equipment.

7. Ability to learn and enforce rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

8. Ability to recognize illegal contraband and substances.

9. Ability to perform basic first aid and CPR.

10. Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and customer service orientation.

11. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.

12. Skill in performing building security and lock procedures.

13. Knowledge of public security codes, policies, and regulations.

14. Ability to understand, follow, and enforce safety codes, regulations, and procedures.

15. Skill in providing protection services to individuals on campus.

16. Ability to detect problems and report information to appropriate personnel.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Must have a high school diploma or GED.

2. A minimum of one year of experience providing security services or related work experience.

3. Basic First Aid and CPR certification or ability to acquire and maintain up-to-date certification.

4. Must be able to develop trust and positive relationships with all students, staff and faculty.

5. This position follows our Red Lake Tribal Member and Indian Preference Policy.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

1. Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.

2. Must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.

3. Possession of a valid MN driver's license.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:

1. Moderate physical activity; requires handling of average-weight objects and standing or walking for extended periods of time.

2. Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.

3. Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
