Tribal squabbling undercuts credibility as election nears

The Lumbee Tribal Government’s dysfunctionality was in full public display this week, raising worry about the tribe’s ability — or even willingness — to hold fair elections, which is fundamental to achieving the credibility that the government continues to chase among the members for whom it only exists to serve.

Early this week elections Chairman Shelia Beck-Jones said that some tribal members a week ago today were sent home while trying to update their enrollment information in advance of the tribal elections on Nov. 17, apparently because staff was overwhelmed with a last-minute rush. But, according to Beck-Jones, the tribal members were not told that updating their information after Friday would mean their ballots would be cast as provisionals, and therefore would only be counted in races tight enough that provisionals could affect the outcome.
