Are Tribes Cutting Their Own Throats With Disenrollment?
Tribes across the continent are now forming the habit of disenrolling its members. At what cost?
Not only does disenrollment tear away family ties from within the tribe, but it leaves those caught up in its wake in a state of "cultural homelessness", and weakens the tribes federal recognition.
Recently, the Saginaw Tribe of Michigan disenrolled 237 tribal members, many of them deceased. The Grand Ronde Tribe of Oregon also disenrolled a large number of members. To what end? Some say that in the case of the Saginaw, it is a land grab to be used to pay off a $85K debt to Abramoff. By disenrolling deceased members who cannot even defend themselves against the action- lands inherited by their descendants comes back to the tribe.
