New VA, HUD Program Will Assist Homeless Native American Veterans

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Department of Veterans Affairs are launching a new program to assist homeless Native American veterans.

What’s known as the Tribal HUD Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing program was announced earlier this week at the annual Convention of the National Congress of American Indians in San Diego.

It will combine $4 million of rental assistance with VA clinical services.

The broader Veterans Affairs Supportive housing program has been in place since 2008. This year Congress authorized additional funding so officials could expand it into Indian Country.

Officials say the goal is to serve about 600 Native American veterans.
