Bemidji woman convicted of manslaughter violates probation

BEMIDJI -- A Bemidji woman convicted of second-degree manslaughter in September appeared in Beltrami County District Court on Friday for a theft charge, which is a violation of her probation.

Rachel Downer, 23, was found to be at fault in the death of her 6-year-old cousin, Mercedes Mayfield, who died of hypothermia while in Downer’s care on Feb. 27, 2014. The girl’s body was found in the early morning hours outside a Bemidji apartment building.
