Tribe denies effort to mislead voters

PEMBROKE — Lumbee tribal officials on Wednesday denied allegations by the tribe’s Board of Elections chairman that some tribal members who attempted to update their enrollment information on Friday were misled about their ability to vote in the Nov. 17 elections.

“The tribe’s ordinance that governs enrollment clearly states that ‘rolls will close 30 days prior to any special or regular election and will remain closed 30 days after or until certification of the election,” a tribal spokesman said in a statement. “We want to make it clear that the Oct. 16 deadline was only for new enrollments … for individuals who have never been enrolled. Staff did not turn away any tribal members.”
