Cass Lake community walks for domestic violence awareness

CASS LAKE—Purple and teal tassels swayed from red shawls Thursday as women walked through the streets of Cass Lake raising awareness for domestic and sexual violence victims and survivors. Men and children followed behind the swarm in support of the cause.

The Minnesota Indian Women's Sexual Assault Coalition and Sacred Hoop Coalition reports one in three American Indian and Alaska Native women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime. Cristine Davidson, with the Minnesota Indian Women's Sexual Assault Coalition, said the "Solidarity Shawls" are intended to reduce invisibility of Native women and children who are victims, and honor survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Davidson herself is a survivor.
