BEMIDJI -- The Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe recently received $2 million in grants to aid in law enforcement and public safety.
The band was awarded three grants totalling $1,941,225 from the federal Department of Justice’s Coordinated Tribal Assistance Solicitation for fiscal year 2015, according to a release.
The Leech Lake Department of Department of Public Safety was awarded $961,997 for equipment and vehicles, while the department and Tribal Courts were awarded $742,397 to hire a court administrator and methamphetamine investigator. The third grant was also awarded to DPS for $236,831 to hire a crime victim’s advocate to assist victims of domestic violence, elders being abused and sexual assault, the release said.
