Holiday is being replaced with Indigenous People's Day in multiple cities
BEMIDJI -- For another year, the second Monday in October was referred to as Columbus Day in Bemidji, but that may not be the case in 2016.
A national trend is underway to change the holiday from honoring Christopher Columbus in favor of setting aside a day to honor Indigenous people. In the past few years, cities such as Minneapolis, St. Paul and Seattle have replaced Columbus Day with a day honoring American Indians.
The most recent example was Monday in North Dakota, when the Fargo City Commission voted 4-1 on a resolution to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous People's Day.
