Ancient game returns: Area youth learn excitement of lacrosse at Cass Lake jamboree

CASS LAKE -- To see them play is to see them discover something lost but not forgotten.

Lacrosse, the nearly thousand-year-old ball-and-stick game developed by Native American tribes here and across the country, is back. But the 50 or so kids running around the pow wow grounds Saturday in Cass Lake weren’t playing the Americanized version of Ivy League schools on ESPN.

One chilly, blue-sky day at a time, local coaches are bringing the game back to its Native roots, teaching kids to shout to the Creator at the beginning of every game, to fire the small round ball not into a net, but at a pole in the ground.
