The ups and downs of growing up Half-Breed

As acknowledged many times in columns, I am of mixed heritage, Irish and Cheyenne, and in my younger years, raised off the reservation, learning quickly from white folks in Prairie County, Mont., it is not good to be “half-breed”.

At a young age, my younger brother Tom and I were shipped to live with Grandmother Kinzel on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation, source of our Indian roots.

“Do you think the Indians will like us?” he asked.

“Maybe better than the white people do,” I hoped.
