AmeriCorps Awards Banquet held in Red Lake - P2

8 members complete year of service

RED LAKE - There were 13 AmeriCorps members from the Red Lake Indian Reservation that started out with the Service to New Scholars program last year, and of those thirteen, 8 completed the year.

In the Service to New Scholars program, AmeriCorps members served at preschools on the Red Lake Indian Reservation, helping prepare children for kindergarten and improve their numeracy, literacy and social/emotional skills.

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) partnered with the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians to bring AmeriCorps national service resources to the Reservation. AmeriCorps uses service as a solution to address pressing issues and improve community conditions by allowing individuals to serve at AmeriCorps members.

AmeriCorps members provide service, gain skills and professional development, and earn a Segal AmeriCorps education award that can be used to pay for tuition at an institution of higher education or to repay qualified student loans.

CNCS funded 18 AmeriCorps Indian Tribes programs and 4 AmeriCorps Indian Tribes planning grants for $3,263,943 and 200 AmeriCorps members in 2015.

An awards banquet was held for those 8 members on Monday, September 28, 2015 at the Red Lake Casino Event Center.

Members receiving their award certificates were: Joshua K. Desjarlait, Trevor Lussier, Emily Bellanger, Aleicia Lussier, Sade Kingbird, Avery Kingbird, Bambi King and Karli Cobenais.

A new set of AmeriCorps members has been selected recently and they will start their service on Thursday.
