James Allen “Jimmy Boy” Brun, 79, entered the Spirit World on September 18, 2015 at his home in Red Lake.

Jimmy Boy was born August 12, 1936 in Red Lake, MN the son of Allen and Martha (Sayers) Brun. Jimmy Boy was educated in Red Lake graduating in 1954 as the class salutatorian. Jimmy Boy then entered the United States Navy and served honorably aboard the USS Heerman from 1955 – 1959 during the Korean War era. Upon his discharge Jimmy Boy returned home and worked for the Red Lake Indian Mills until he found his true calling as a Forestry Technician for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Red Lake, which later became the Red Lake DNR Forestry Department from 1965 until his retirement in 2010. Jimmy Boy was also a proud member of the Native American National Fire Fighting Crew from 1965 – 2009 which took him to many different reservations throughout the United States to combat forest fires. Jimmy Boy also served as a housing commissioner for the Red Lake Housing Authority from 2003 to the present.

Jimmy Boy was a very intelligent man, who took pride in being fluent in the Ojibwe language which he preferred to speak. Jimmy Boy was a kind, humorous, sociable man who had many friends as well as touching the lives of many more, especially his nieces and nephews. Jimmy Boy enjoyed the great outdoors whether he was hunting, fishing or deep in the forest (as he put it) working. Jimmy Boy was also an avid traveler and sports fan who made annual trips to watch his favorite team the Chicago Cubs.

He is survived by his brother Francis “Chunky” Brun and his sister Roberta Ann Smith. Jimmy Boy is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Mary and Tara, Roxanne, Ron (Lisa), Patrick, and Donnie Bo, as well as several other nieces, nephews and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents Allen and Martha Brun, his brother Donald “Bo” Brun and his sister Marilyn “Girlie” King and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

A wake for Jimmy Boy will begin at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 22nd at the Red Lake Community Center and continue until his 1:00 p.m. service on Thursday, September 24th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Red Lake. Father Jerry Rogers will officiate. Active pallbearers are Donald “Donnie Bo” Brun, Ron Brun, Patrick Brun, Francis “Zonce” Brun, Jeffrey Brun, James King, Paul King, Brett Brun, Brian Brun, Don Brun and Daniel Brun, Greg Stately, Curtis Jourdain, Sr. and Jimmy Jourdain. Honorary pallbearers are Roman “Duck” Stately, Don Cook, Sr., Fabian Cook, Hank Cook, Mickey Fairbanks, Maurice “Jocko” Thunder, Adrian Omen, Billy King, Dwight Sayers, Fabian Sayers, Richard Barrett, Harlan Beaulieu, Ron Beaulieu, Jr., Bobbi Jo Beaulieu, Arnie Chaboyea, Terry Lussier and Jerry Lussier, and his former co-workers at Red Lake DNR Forestry Department, the Red Lake Nation Firefighting crew and the staff at Red Lake housing Authority. Interment will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery at Red Lake following his Thursday service. Military honors accorded by the Red Lake Honor Guard.
