New opportunities for American Indian students at ISD 318

In the 2015 education bill, Senator Saxhaug advocated for American Indian students, and thanks to his hard work, all ISD 318 students will benefit. The additional funding will allow for the ISD 318 American Indian Services Department to offer new supports for American Indian students, to strengthen existing programs, and to offer additional learning opportunities about American Indian history and culture to all students.

“When I started teaching, the word ‘savage’ was still being used in textbooks,” said Indian Education teacher Joan Bibeau. Today we’re starting to see the resources necessary to teach kids about American Indian history. Funding will also enable ISD 318 to take the steps necessary to continue to close the achievement gap.
