Deer River man charged in double-fatal collision

BEMIDJI—A 29-year-old Deer River man has been charged in the deaths of two people in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday morning in Itasca County.

Derrick Lee Cloud has been charged with two felony counts of criminal vehicular homicide in the deaths of Cory J. Jones, 27, of Cass Lake, and Jaclyn G. Howard, 21, of Deer River, according to a release Thursday from Itasca County Attorney John Muhar's office.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a 1994 Chevrolet Camaro driven by Jones was southbound on State Highway 46 at County Road 143 when it pulled onto the shoulder and initiated a u-turn. A 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by Cloud was also traveling south on Highway 46 and struck the driver's side of the Camaro, the patrol said. Both vehicles came to rest in the east ditch. The crash was reported at 6:41 a.m. Tuesday.
