Ojibwe Tribes in Minnesota Challenge US Treaty Over Resource Use and Oil Pipelines

Members of Ojibwe tribes in Minnesota are asserting their right to land and resources under a treaty that the US signed in 1855. In the latest in an on-going series of actions, community members recently harvested wild rice and fished in the Gull Lake area.

Hoping to head off a legal conflict, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources issued one-day permits to the activists, even though they had not applied for them. Leaders from the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwa tore the permits publicly and went ahead. They were then issued citations, which is exactly what they wanted.
