TWO HARBORS — The storm had thundered past and the night was calm Saturday as I lay in bed, wondering if my often-sore back and shoulders could take the strain of harvesting wild rice. I also wondered if I would prove myself worthy of taking part in the ancient tradition.
By late afternoon, I found that shoulders worked well, but my legs cramped badly. How worthy I was is harder to define. I only know I want to try again.
Harvesting wild rice has been sacred Native American work for hundreds or thousands of years, necessary for physical and spiritual survival. Rice is seen as a gift to the people.
