USDA Deputy Under-Secretary Wilson visits Red Lake Schools

RED LAKE, MN - The Red Lake School's Food Service Program, Superintendent Anne Lundquist and Board Chairman Michael Barrett, met with Dr. Katie Wilson, USDA Deputy Under-Secretary from Washington D.C. on Wednesday, August 27, 2015 at the Red Lake Administration Office.

Along with Dr. Wilson were Jenny Butcher, Summer Food Service Program Facilitator at the Minnesota Department of Education, and Gail Anderson, Healthier US School Challenge Facilitator at MDE.

Some of the discussions included how Red Lake Schools have changed over the years with nutrition and varieties of different foods, salad bars, the Farm-to-School Program, school gardens involving students and various grant opportunities available through the State and Government.

Jo Lange, Red Lake Food Service Coordinator, intends on exploring these discussions and perhaps implementing them in the upcoming year.

The guests also toured the high school cafeteria and kitchen, the middle school cafeteria and kitchen, the culture room, and also looked over the construction site of the new cafeteria complex.

Dr. Wilson hopes to come back to Red Lake for the ribbon cutting ceremony of the new cafeteria, and Gail Anderson was hoping to be in Red Lake for some of the Healthier US School Challenge celebrations.
